Product Description ↓

The rugged, GPS-enabled Casio G’zOne (pronounced geez won … *sigh*) Rock is perhaps a more annoyingly spelled product name than anything Garmin has ever come up with (even without any umlauts). But it is not without merit; designed for peeps that like to play outside, the handset features six operating modes, including Earth Compass, Walking Counter, Thermometer, Astro Calendar, and Sunrise Sunset and Tides. Netflix and the couch more your speed? Verizon is also getting the new gee-whiz Samsung Omnia II, according to the Intertubes.

I have to admit, if this Casio phone were a GSM phone — I’m one of those people — I’d be tempted. The Casio G’zOne Rock meets military standards (MIL-STD-810F) for exposure to water, shock, dust, vibration, humidity, salt fog, solar radiation, altitude, and high and low temperatures. If you could hear me right now I’m grunting like Tim Allen (and the people at my local coffee shop are staring). Of course, as Wikipedia points out, there is some leeway in testing when it comes to consumer gadgets claiming to meet MIL-STD-810 specs. But Casio has a pretty good rep for making rugged gear, so we’ll give ‘em the benefit of the doubt.

Other stats:

  • Stereo Bluetooth
  • touch-sensitive music controls on the sub-display

And here is what Verizon is calling lifestyle features, including the aforementioned outdoorsy modes (courtesy of the various sensors the handset is equipped with):

  • Walking Counter – measures steps, time, distance, speed, and energy consumption
  • Thermometer – shows current temperature in both Celsius and Fahrenheit (for North American luddites)
  • Astro Calendar – provides the moon’s age and days until a full or new moon
  • Sunrise Sunset – shows the current time and position of the sun and times for sunrise and sunset for current, past and future dates; allows user to view times for major cities; shows the ratio of day and night in numbers and graphs
  • Tides – shows the tidal graph for the day; shows the time of ebb and flood tides; shows the time of sunrise and sunset; shows past and future sea tide levels; shows tidal graphs for 100 locations made available by Surfline’s webcams, and GPS will show the nearest location; shows the current tide and the best time for fishing
